Into the Wild

Nick: This is Chris McCandless, who seventeen years ago abandoned the lie of civilization only to perish in the lie of wilderness. Were we all so reckless and beautiful, maybe this world would be worth saving. An extraordinary, wasted life.

I felt torn about this book. I loved that there is someone out there like Chris McCandless who is willing to throw himself into nature and just soak it in. He loved the people around him during his travels, but he never sacrificed his ideas for life for someone's wishes. I think that takes an incredible amount of guts. Disappointing people around you can paralyze all other senses. I think it is what stops one from taking the next leap.
And then I was so angry with his great adventure. How can someone so smart be so ill prepared? He was reckless, you are right, but I don't think for a second that he had a death wish. Did he just underestimate Alaska, or did a certain part of him deep inside just feel that it was the right way to end his saga?

I think what he found there was just what he wanted: something hard and austere and morally clean. The tragedy, of course, is that he had to find those values in a place that kills the very people who look for them there. Sometimes we want to desperately to find something better than this sad, unsatisfying life that we forget that sadness and dissatisfaction are only stages on life's way. He breaks my heart, Chris McCandless.

he wasn't ill prepared. I dont have the book with me right now but I believe he survived like 200 something day out there, If you ask me thats not ill prepared, That is under educated. He had almost no knowledge of plant life. All he had was a book. And as far as the movie, those bastard ruined it. That's all I am gonna say about the movie without going into a rant. He found what he was looking for alright, but it was a classic case of, you don't know what you got till its gone. He just wanted to connect with someone or something. But he didn't realize this until it was to late. To really get to know his situation go check out the original articals and diary notes he left behind in the outdoor magazine.
